too hot, too cool. by Scott

During our time in Ghana, the days started out hot. And, then got a bit hotter. And a bit more humid. And, then hotter and more humid. Soon, it seemed as if your sweat was sweating. Can you imagine a full body quilt made of perspiration? I can’t quite find the right word to describe it…except to simply say it was just too hot. We spent four days in Ghana. The colors, the music and the food are all embodied with joy. The people are hard-working, upbeat, proud and welcoming. Although it was too hot, Ghana was also just too … Continue reading too hot, too cool. by Scott

not an expert, by Scott

I am not an expert on much, if anything, but I’m always trying to learn more. Book learning can only take us so far. At some point in time, over the course of one’s education in the US, the caste in India and apartheid in South Africa are ‘covered’. I have to admit that I don’t recall when I studied them in school; or what I learned about them. Did it actually get covered? If it did, I most certainly didn’t gain much insight into either. Maybe I wasn’t paying sufficient attention when these topics were discussed. Or maybe sufficient … Continue reading not an expert, by Scott

To and in Hawaii, Tate

A week ago we picked up all the students and began our long trek across the Pacific. We were going to be on a ship for a whole week with 600 college students, I know what you’re thinking, how did we ever survive! First of all we are on the highest deck where there are cabins. Some students are as many as five decks below us. Classes started two days after we left Mexico. Now every morning I go to Global Studies for an hour, then I go to the Lido restaurant and do some schoolwork for another hour. I … Continue reading To and in Hawaii, Tate

First few days aboard, Scott

We’re on a ship, not a boat. This is a voyage, not a cruise. Left is port, right is starboard. The ship rolls to port and starboard and pitches to fore and aft. And I got a headache because this ship, on its voyage, does a fair amount of pitching fore to aft. And, because I’m staying very focused on these terms to avoid embarrassing myself by complementing the captain on how cool his boat is… Ever trying to run on a treadmill that is set up looking starboard while pitching? (i.e, I was facing the left side of the ship while it … Continue reading First few days aboard, Scott

On the ship by Tate

Yesterday we went got onto the World Odyssey, where we will be living in a 500 sq cabin for the next few months. The ship is spectacular, there are nine decks and two halls of cabins on each deck, except for nine. On this voyage I will visit a total of ten countries across three continents. (Not including North America.) When I return I will have visited every continent exept for Antartica.  At a meeting two days a go I met a kid named Blake. He is one year older than me, he loves soccer and is from Washington. The … Continue reading On the ship by Tate

Preparing, by Scott

Well, since the other three have their first posts up on the blog, I figured I’d best get something up as well. Given what you’ve read so far you can probably imagine that I am figuring out how to pack construction tools – a drill, table saw, hammer and nails. It seems like there will be some major remodeling underway in our cabin during the first few days. Shouldn’t be a problem installing a wall and second bathroom – right? And I’ll just have to pack light in terms of clothing…or just re-wear what I leave the house in on Sunday? Sacrifices … Continue reading Preparing, by Scott
